Delaware County Prison Board's Meetings Now Recorded

DelcoCPR and McCAUSLAND Keen + Buckman successfully pushed the Delaware County Board of Prison Inspectors to comply with the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act, allowing meetings to be recorded and shared with the public.

Bras and Books Drive

DelcoCPR members spearheaded a hugely successful Bras and Books Drive in February 2018. Gwen McCullough had the idea for the drive while visiting George W. Hill prison with other members of DelcoCPR:

"When we were in the library (if you want to call it that because there weren’t any books except old law books) I saw a flyer on the office door advertising a books and bras drive. I asked the person working there, she said it was from Penn State/ Main Campus. She said they collected 40 bras and 20 boxes of books a few years back. She told me that the prison doesn’t provide bras so the prisoners have to request them and then they are only available if they have been donated."

DelcoCPR leader Kabeera Weissman reached out to George W. Hill Superintendent John Reilly who agreed to the drive. DelcoCPR members Michelle Midgette and Nicole Johns, alongside Gwen, generously offered to act as drop-off locations for the donations that poured in. Community members donated over 150 bras and 80 boxes of books directly and through an Amazon wishlist!

It took four cars to deliver the bras and books to George W. Hill Correctional Facility, where they were put to use immediately for our incarcerated sisters and brothers. Thank you to everyone who donated from your homes and your hearts!

Taking the Campaign to County Council

DelcoCPR leader Kabeera M. Weissman spoke directly to Delaware County Council at the weekly meeting on February 27, 2018.

In general, if every other county in Pennsylvania can deal with their county jails and oversight and operate and manage them effectively, why can’t this county?”
— Kabeera M. Weissman

After the meeting, Kabeera spoke with Council Chairman John McBlain who said that the Delaware County Board of Prison Inspectors would have to solicit a request for proposal from service providers in order to consider changing the management of the prison.

Rally to Deprivatize Delco's Prison

DelcoCPR members and area residents gathered in Media, PA in front of the Delaware County Courthouse on February 24, 2018 to rally to Deprivatize Delco's Prison. Speakers shared details about the privatization campaign, what group members witnessed during a visit to George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Fall 2017, and a personal experience of incarceration at the prison.
